It is with a sigh of wistfulness that I observe the date on the last post of this blog...March 10, 2009. Has it really been over a year since my last entry?! Granted, much has taken precedence since my days of happily posting as well as voraciously reading other blogs. I still remember when I first discovered that new and wonderful corner of the world wide web--the blogosphere--and how easily enamored I became of it! Now, sad to say, I am unable to visit as often as I'd wish, other than to quickly and briefly catch up with certain friends who have remained faithful to the practice. (And how glad I am that they do!) There are two main reasons I have been remiss on this enjoyable outlet. First and foremost, I was convicted by the amount of time it took away from the most important thing in my life...my family! The one to suffer most from this distraction was my young son. He would often beg for my attention as I either waved him away or promised to be done in just five more minutes. After a time, I came to my senses and realized that being a mother to my son was, and should always be, my top priority. That's not to say it's impossible to do both, but at the time I had not yet learned to balance the two. Shortly afterwards, a long-dormant desire was rekindled within me--the urge to write! Once more, I was faced with the conflict of fulfilling my duty as wife and mother versus indulging the need for my imagination to take flight whilst harnessing it in words. It was a bitter struggle, with my family bearing faint bruises as a result. In the end, I learned to accept the fact that though I may not be able to satisfy my love of writing as frequently as I'd like, I can be thankful for the precious moments when I can steal away and write to my heart's desire! And for the last year or so, I have been doing exactly that. In the dining room. On my bed. On the floor of my living room. All this to say that....(tum-ta-da-da!) I am happy to announce that I now have a writing room of my very own! Which is the real reason for this post.

Wishful Thinking

I have to credit my brother-in-law with this recent find...wedding videographer extraordinaire, Jason Magbanua. He takes wedding videography to a whole new level. With my ten-year anniversary rapidly approaching, I can't help wishing I'd known about this guy because the way he captures wedding memories is so completely compelling that compared to most videos that are, to be frank, boring to anyone other than the couple that was married, you'll want to watch his over and over again. Here are just a few of my faves....Enjoy!

Valentine's in Vegas

I must admit, it sounds a bit cheese-y, doesn't it? Valentine's in Vegas? Really?! Not to mention the irony involved...my husband and I don't gamble! So why would we choose this place of all the possibly far more romantic locales we could have decided upon? Namely this, it afforded me the opportunity to attend a production I've been wanting to watch for years, the Cirque du Soleil. For our very first show, we went to see Mystere and I was not disappointed! Touted as "an intriguing blend of beauty and strength, power and grace, passion and precision", Mystere was just that. I was truly amazed by the talent, strength and skill of the artists. Their performances left me awestruck and many times on the edge of my seat. I can't wait to watch another one!

A Fabulous Fourth

Just a brief report on my Fourth of July weekend. It was one of those memorable occasions that can be attributed to that perfect combination which makes any gathering a success--good food and lots of it, a lovely location with just the right ambiance, and most importantly, people with whom it is a joy to be with! Of course, that included my mother, my one and only sister and her gregarious husband, and many of my oldest and dearest friends along with their families. It was blissful to watch the children immensely enjoying themselves as they frolicked along the shore, dodging waves and building sand castles, while the adults busied themselves with their own amusements--the men bumping a volleyball or throwing a football, and the ladies unsuccessfully tossing a frisbee but still managing to have a good time! It brings to mind something that I had shared on Brin's blog:

"There are so many beautiful things about life. One of them are those brief moments in the midst of crazy, hectic fun or sublime merriment where you pause, take a deep breath, glance around meaningfully, and realize just how blessed you really are--that profound stillness filled with thankfulness directed to the God who has graciously allowed us to enjoy all things."

I certainly felt this that day! So suffice it to say that I am feeling very thankful--for friends, for family, for freedom and for fleeting moments of beauty!

Firefly Dreams

If you've read my sidebar, you would know that seeing fireflies is something I've always longed to do. In my youth, I'd often stare up at the stars, mesmerized by the multitude of those fixed points of light that illuminated the night sky. How much more enchanting would it be to witness the magical dance of fireflies on a warm summer night! To be honest, I don't know if I'll ever have the chance in this lifetime to witness such a spectacular sight. At least there are pictures like the one below to satisfy somewhat.

Then, there is this faux firefly jar! I think I may have to purchase this and place it in my son's bedroom. Then, both he and I can dream of fireflies together.

I'm back. For how long, I really cannot say. Will I return tomorrow? The day after? Next week? Who knows? I don't mean to be noncommittal, but California blue skies and warm weather beckon too invitingly, and sitting in front of a computer is the last thing I desire to do when those twin sirens call. I must be out--enjoying the sun, breathing deep of the fresh, clean air, walking briskly alongside green vineyards and relishing the lovely sight and scent of fragrant blooms. If you're wondering where I've been, that is exactly what I have been doing! I hope that you, too, are enjoying the late spring-early summer days, wherever you are. . . .

A mainly white palette is so peaceful and serene, don't you think? It also feels cool and refreshing, especially during the brighter, warmer days of spring and summer. During the cold months of winter, however, when the days are short and the skies tend to be gloomy and overcast, I prefer richer, earthier tones to warm up my interiors. On days such as those, I think this palette would feel downright chilly! Thank goodness those days are still far away or these photos would not beckon to us so invitingly.

As I gaze upon this photo I imagine myself sitting serenely at one of these intimate tables, breathing deeply of the summer evening air that is sweetly perfumed by the encircling garden of flowers and aromatic herbs. I am as relaxed and carefree as only one can be when thousands of miles away from home and the cares and responsibilities it entails, and have found myself in a place that is foreign, unfamiliar yet captivating. I revel in the beauty of the moment--the sights, the sounds, the smells--savoring them slowly, holding on as long as I can, before the moment is gone and has passed into the realm of memory. . . .

* I thought a little (made up) story to go along with the photo might make it a bit more interesting! Pardon the melodrama. I may have taken one too many creative writing courses!

Anyway, this is a completely frivolous post, though it was something I wanted to do a while back. I never was successful in finding photo stills from this video and had to take the time to pause/copy/save these stills myself off of youtube, hence the poor resolution of the images. I'm not a huge Gwen Stefani fan (Well, I do like her a little. Okay, maybe a little more than a little!) but I do enjoy some of her less outlandish, retro styles, and I really like the style and scenery in this particular video. My husband and I have been talking about visiting the Italian Lakes for our ten year anniversary next year and this video inspires!

Bumbleberry Black Bottom Pie

Cielo, of The House in the Roses, is having a Dessert Carnival today! The recipe below was my contribution to this fun event. If you want to drool over and perhaps collect some other yummy dessert recipes, be sure to head over to her site. As for this dessert right here, doesn't the name "bumbleberry" just make your mouth water? Trust me, it's as delicious as it sounds. The best part is that it's very simple to make and is a perfect spring or summertime treat.

"bumbleberry"--a wonderful combination
of blueberries, raspberries & blackberries

topped with whipped cream & shaved chocolate

4 ounces bittersweet chocolate
2 tablespoons orange juice
4 eggs, separated
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
pinch salt
1 cup each blueberries, blackberries, raspberries (or any combination desired)
3 tablespoons sugar
1 cup heavy cream whipped with 2 tablespoons powdered sugar and 2 tablespoons orange or berry liqueur (optional)
shaved chocolate (optional)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Melt chocolate with orange juice in a small heavy saucepan or double boiler over low heat. Stir until smooth and let cool. Butter a 10-inch pie plate.

Beat yolks with sugar in a bowl until very thick and pale in color. Add cinnamon and melted chocolate, beating slowly until blended. Beat whites with salt until stiff. Add whites one-third at a time to mixture, folding in gently with a spatula. Pour mixture into the pie plate, level with spatula, and bake for about 25 minutes. Allow to cool. As crust cools, it will sink in the center, forming a shell.

In large bowl, toss berries with sugar. (Note: be sure to use firm raspberries or they will fall apart rather than stay intact when you mix them). Fill cooled pie shell with berry mixture. Spread with whipped cream and sprinkle with shaved chocolate. Voila!

I must say, I really enjoyed this movie! Granted, I don't condone one-night stands, but other than that one objection, the rest of the movie was quite sweet and endearing. Just don't watch this movie expecting it to be realistic. It's more of an urban legend. If you watch it with this point-of-view, you'll be less likely to nitpick and more likely to enjoy the movie.

A Classic

If you ever had the opportunity to take a peek into my closet this is what you would find--several pairs of blue jeans, a pair or two each of black and gray slacks, brown cargo pants, several sets of white/black/gray t-shirts in crew neck or v-neck versions, zip-up hoodies in white/black/gray, and several versions of the classic white shirt. I'm not entirely opposed to color. I have some red, blue, brown and green items of clothing thrown into the mix, although I do avoid oranges, yellows and purples. I am also wary of loud prints or patterns. The items I listed above are my main staples, the foundation of my wardrobe. On any given day I am wearing a combination of these items of clothing. Now that I am no longer working and am a full-time stay-at-home mom, I have been relying heavily on the jeans/t-shirt/hoody combination! All this to say that I am fond of clean, simple styles. This is precisely why I was first drawn to the designer Anne Fontaine years ago when she first introduced her line of classic white shirts. In the years since, she has managed to elevate the white shirt to near iconic status and has expanded into other areas as well.

Per a friend's recommendation, we visited Woodhouse Chocolate. Talk about eye candy! There were edible tea cups, thrones, snails and topiaries, to name a few!

Next we visited this winery. Why this winery, you ask? Well, I saw a picture of a double heart sculpture that was located at this particular winery and I told hubby we had to visit because it was obviously symbolic of the loving union we were celebrating.

Castello di Amorosa

Castello di Amorosa (translated "Castle of Love"--how appropriate!) was one of our last ventures before heading back to the daily grind. Call it our fairytale ending! When we arrived at the castle, I nearly had to pinch myself because I thought I was back in Tuscany! There were the same rolling green hills, the same tall, skinny cypresses and a medieval-looking castle right before our very eyes. Apparently, the owner, Sattui, is a self-confessed medieval architecture fanatic who also owns a former monastery and a Medici palace in Italy. Go figure.

Lately I've been reading an inordinate amount of books on trains due to a certain little man's keen interest in anything having to do with steam engines, cabooses and bells & whistles. Of course, I'm talking about my son who is not even three and yet can recite much of "The Little Engine That Could" on his own. The latest train book we have on loan from the library is called "Chugga Chugga Choo Choo," a very cute book, by the way! Suffice it to say, trains on the brain led my train of thought to the Orient Express, which I thought would be fun and interesting to post about.

The Orient Express calls to mind a period of time when travel was still very much a luxury limited to the wealthy and privileged. Launched in 1883 and officially christened in 1891, the Orient Express became the world's most famous train, transporting passengers between Paris and Istanbul. In its heyday in the 1930s, the luxury train took three nights to cross Europe and arrive at the gateway to the Middle East -- a journey that inspired romance, intrigue and Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express. Imagine my surprise when I discovered, via a program on the Travel Channel, that the Orient Express was still in existence! I was fascinated by its attempts to recapture that seemingly lost travel experience--the elegance and excitement of the grand adventure! Apparently, such an experience can still be had. . . at a cost. The luxurious interiors alone make it worthwhile, not to mention the exquisite meals and attentive service. By attentive, I mean personal butler!

The vintage decor is so transporting! One can imagine how travel might have been like in those Victorian days or during the turn of the century--sipping tea while sitting in a plush dining car of inlaid wood paneling with real silver and crystal on the tables and looking out the window at the pristine view of the Swiss Alps or French countryside. Ahh, what a dream! If the Orient Express is the train, then I'm all aboard!

Today our church's Mom's Club had its annual ATIC. The acronym stands for "All Things In Common" based on the principle in Acts 2:44. This is how it works, everyone brings whatever they want to get rid of that is still in good, working condition and leaves it for others to take. Simple enough, huh? So last night, my husband and I purged our closets! I got to get rid of clothes we no longer use and I, in turn, got some pretty cool new books and toys for my son and the bowls below. They were in mint condition--not a crack or scratch on the entire set! Coincidentally, my husband was just saying that we needed more bowls. (In our household, we go through bowls much faster than we do plates).

One dictionary definition of beauty is: the quality present in a thing or person that gives intense pleasure or deep satisfaction to the mind, whether arising from sensory manifestations (as shape, color, sound, etc.), a meaningful design or pattern, or something else (as a personality in which high spiritual qualities are manifest).

As the title suggests, this blog focuses on those "things" I find to be beautiful. But, as you know, beauty is not merely limited to the appearance of inanimate objects. There is a greater and deeper beauty to be found in such qualities as kindness, generosity or humble gratitude, and especially in the people who display them. Make no mistake, though I do enjoy beautiful "things," I take a greater pleasure in beautiful "people" who are beautiful not because of the way they look, but because of the way they live! (I Peter 3:3-4)

It's true, I do go on and on about this bakery, don't I? Well, really, it's the closest thing to a Parisienne bakery as I will ever get to outside of Paris. So, since I cannot discuss Lenotre, Pierre Herme, La Maison du Chocolat or any of those other revered Paris patisseries, I will once again expound on the sweet delights of Bouchon Bakery! Below is their chocolate tart. I've had the chocolate tart from Maison du Chocolat which Dorie Greenspan of Paris Sweets recommended. It was purely chocolate and simply delicious. This version has a thin layer of caramel at the bottom between the chocolate custard and the chocolate crust. A delectable variation of this treat!

When I'm feeling sad, I simply remember my FAVORITE THINGS. . . (and well, you know the rest).

Taking a hint from Mara at :: the simpler things :: I've compiled a list of some of my favorite things. These are supposed to be things I use regularly, so here goes. . . .

My husband bought this for me as a Valentine's gift and it has since become my favorite fragrance.

Here is yet another fragrance I use, but for the home. These have replaced the Glade plug-ins I used to swear by. They're prettier than the plug-ins, more energy-efficient and free up valuable outlet space. (Just have to add that I have my sister to thank for introducing these to me when she gave me one as a gift).

It was a sad day when I had to acknowledge my need for eye cream. But since I do have to use it, this is the one I have learned to love! Their Eye Alert is pretty cool, too.

Since I don't like that caked-on powder look that comes from touching up with a compact too often, this is a definite must, especially during the warmer months when we ladies tend to "glisten" more than usual.

This is my all-time favorite shampoo. It has a unique, fresh, clean scent and I love how it makes my scalp tingle!

I need my coffee fix every morning, so this is a lifesaver! Just program it the night before and your hot cuppa joe is waiting for you when you wake up.

As the family historian, this has been an indispensable instrument for capturing those special moments.

Post-it notes: always handy for a quick note to a family member or reminder to oneself! Of course, I prefer pretty ones like these to the typical yellow ones.

Taking a bath is my daily luxury! Some people have regularly scheduled massages and since that is something I cannot afford, I resort to soaking in the tub instead. It's nearly as good and is such a soothing de-stresser! (Note: this is not my bathroom. Don't I wish! Photo is from BHG.)

Last, but certainly not least, my favorite book of all time. I still love my NKJV which sits on my nightstand, but this is the one I've been carrying around.

In my younger, ignorant days my idea of Swedish furniture was limited to Scandinavian Designs. It was only later that I learned about the particular Swedish design called Gustavian. I immediately took to its combination of clean lines, gentle curves and delicate details. One day, I hope to incorporate a few choice pieces into my home.

As promised, today I present to you a post on food, or rather, a food. A very special, tasty type of food. A TKO. At least, that's what I'd always thought it was called. It made sense. I mean, when you tasted it, it was a knock out, in the sense that it would knock you out because it was so good! But when my husband purchased it for me two days ago, he overheard another patron in line telling his companion that TKO stood for Thomas Keller's Oreo. Ahhhh, so that's what it meant!! Now that made perfect sense! In case you didn't know, Thomas Keller is the chef of the renowned French Laundry restaurant. He also owns several other establishments in the tiny town of Yountville including Ad Hoc, Bouchon Bistro and the adjacent bakery below. Another interesting bit of information--he was the advisor on the animated motion picture "Ratatouille."

Backstory: I asked my husband to buy two TKO's. One for me to consume immediately. A second for me to bring home and take pictures of for this post. Well, it turns out I couldn't wait to go home and take pictures prior to eating the second cookie! Consequently, these two pictures were taken on the center console of our car while I waited for my husband to come out of Dean & Deluca. Sorry, I really did mean to place it on a pretty dish or something.

Lately, a good night's rest has been very elusive for me. I know many women (and men) can relate! Sometimes the mind is racing over things that need to be done, or things that werent' done. Maybe it's being overstimulated right before going to bed. Sometimes, and I know this may sound absurd, I think I'm just too tired to sleep! Worse for me, it seems that even the faintest hint of light, from say a clock radio, can inhibit sleep from coming. So when I saw this, I thought, "Wow, just what I never knew I needed!" After all, everyone needs their beauty sleep. . .

In my opinion, Kate Spade makes some of the cutest, chicest baby bags out there. I really like her use of stripes and polka dots that give them a whimsical flair. The second bag has a changing pad that is black with white polka dots on one side and lime green on the other. Too cute!

Oh, and she happens to have designed this stroller, too!

So I was perusing this new site I just discovered called DesignAmour when my eye latched onto this. Granted, the post was about the kimono-inspired gown being modeled, but what really caught my eye was the wallpaper in the background. I love that shade of muted slate blue and the subtle floral/leaf pattern embellishing it.
